AUGUST KPOP WRAP- UP! (Which of them stood out the most?)

This August  the comebacks of many K-Pop artists arrived to compete for the crown, which is kind of interesting and exciting since they all targeted for the same month. Some of which even had the same name. It also marked the rise of new K-Pop groups that, surprisingly, got the most attention in their debut song. But there are some downfalls to some groups that were involved in some issues that may affect their careers.  In chronological order (not really), we list the things which, for us, stood up the most this August!

DEBUTS!

This August had the most amazing debuts I have seen thus far for their huge popularity on their first song!

KWrUp 1st segment pic 1

The two newly debuted groups, Red Velvet (SMEnt) and Winner (YG), showed their unique and charismatic styles that really swept the charts. Red Velvet’s surprising debut of “Happiness” showcased the colors and quirkiness that will surely make us happy for. They also showcased their singing that will completely amaze us all. And in terms of the MV, it’s a perfect one to meet all our expectations, even surpassing them. It’s a nice strategy for SM Entertainment to surprise us with a new girl group that has a big potential, especially to the K-Pop scene.

Next is the awaited debut of WINNER with their two songs “Color Ring” and “EMPTY”. One thing that made them stood amongst other K-Pop groups is the vibe they set for their album. And their gloomy-slash-heartbroken feels to their music is a ‘perfecto’.

KWrUp 1st segment pic 2

Both showed their amazing skill in the scene that will surely set another standard.

KPOP RELEASES

Speaking of standards, other K-Pop groups are also in line with others for their new releases that will make their fans go spazzin’.

KWrUp 2nd segment pic 1

Starting off with Orange Caramel’s “My Copycat”.  The melody was kind of weird for me at first, and as it builds up, the cuteness adds up to the vibe of the song. And their interactive MV made me pause the video to see what is missing from both sides. Undeniably, K-Pop girl groups are not complete without their sexiness. (But seriously, I STILL  CAN’T FIND THEM FROM A LARGE CROWD OF PEOPLE DANCING!)

Talking about sexiness, let the sexiness begin with Hyuna’s “Red”, and Sistar’s “I Swear”.

Hyuna’s “Red” never failed to describe “sexy” with the twerking and the melody that is a- maze. Beauty and passion is a plus for her too. Another will make you feel good about summer like never before with Sistar’s “I Swear”.

KWrUp 2nd segment pic 2

Did someone say SUMMER? For Sistar perfected the elements of summer with the song “I Swear”! Swimming? Check. Swimming Outfits? Check. Parties? Check! The video is a blast! And the song is upbeat, yet it hadn’t lost its sexy and summer factor that surely satisfies us all. “I Swear” is a good follow- up from last month’s “Touch My Body”, not missing all the fun and excitement while summer hasn’t ended yet. Sistar is a sweet danger this month.

KWrUp 2nd Segment pic 3

Speaking of danger (hell yea I love segues!), this month is the battle of “DANGER” by Taemin and BTS. Taemin went for a Michael Jackson type bad boy and danced smoothly as what we all can expect. Meanwhile, BTS also had theirs, but down the subway, with the crashing and punching and some cool dance moves as well. I won’t talk about this for long, either way; they both had their amazing performances (Let’s love everyone!).

Last but not the least, Super Junior went ‘ayaya!’ for their new song “MAMACITA”. The rhythm and the lyrics are not really that hard, that’s why it’s a plus for them so they can make people go ‘ayaya!’ as well. Cheers to everyone who worked very hard for August! (A review by the head writer will discuss this further)

UPDATES

We all know the things Dispatch has been releasing around the internet, and it’s SM that, we think, is the main target of the buzzes this month. Starting off with Sulli-Choiza issue.

The dating rumors have ended when SME, together with Amoeba Culture, confirmed about each other’s mutual feelings for each other! Both parties said that they started with a hoobae- sunbae relationship then developed to what they are now. Meanwhile some rumors about Sulli leaving her group f(x) are still left unanswered by her entertainment agency.

Buzzing, you say? For a rookie group member Kemy from A.KOR buzzed the whole world released a diss track talking about Bom of 2NE1 and the rumors about her using prescription drugs for medication. DOO Republic, the said rookie’s entertainment agency spoke up about this controversy and explained that “it was only a submission for a rap competition”.

Now let’s go see some positivity from last month!

KWrUp last segment

EXOTICS? EXO- Stan? EXO- Global? IT’S EXO- L! Coming from the middle of the letter K (EXO- K) and M (EXO- M), EXO- L stands for “EXO- LOVE” and will be used by EXO fans all around the world. After the announcement of the fandom name was the release of the site where you can register as a fan! EXO- L, come check it out before it ends!

More from EXO is their new show, EXO 90:2014 where they gather to interview some of the groups that were famous from 90’s K-Pop scene. Each member are tasked for a music video for a certain group. SM Rookies also show their potential by dancing some of the 90’s hits in Korea. Can’t wait for the next debut!

Lastly, the new show Apink Showtime! Apink emerged greatly on the -Pop scene that we are also about to experience how it feels like to be them on their reality show where they show their true characters each day. On the coming days are some other episodes that will make us feel all things! Fighting Apink!

But truly, K-Pop will never run out of surprises and colors as they continue to shine all over the world, making their music globally competitive. Who wants to see more of them?! I WOULD REALLY LOVE TO, YES PLEASE!!!!

**To catch up from last month’s affairs at K-Pop I decided to make something like this Wrap- Up. I hope you enjoyed last month as well!**

OMO: Everybody(, They Are Back Again!) – [SHINee’s Everybody MV Review]

It’s their third time to return to the stage this year and yes, that’s the most amount of comebacks I’ve seen from a SM Ent. group in my whole stay in KPop and add that this is their fourth time to release an album (I know, this is a “mini”-album but still, it is an album). It looks like it is SHINee’s year this time and SHAWols are none the less happy about it.

SHINeeMontage

Before releasing their MV for their title track, they have teased us with Symptoms which I have to briefly commend because it did showcase how powerful the vocals of this team. Their rappers can sing too. That surprised me.

Everybody is more electro than what I previously thought this is going to be. It is electro with a mix of a lot of dubstep, since the beginning of the song, and everything, thus, they’ve said in a press release that this is “complextro”. It is not as electro as f(x)’s electro nor as electro as Lucifer but they are nearing it again because of the dubstep that is thrown all over the whole track specially the chorus. It is nothing like Dream Girl, which they’ve released earlier this year, this one has the avant-garde concept and this is way stronger as oppose to the light and colorful ensemble they’ve had with Dream Girl. Maybe to add variation to balance what they have released earlier.

We first heard this song at their comeback special which had a live-stream on YouTube (Note: the stream was very lag-y!) and my first impression was quite good and the chorus part together with the synth/ dubstep it has in between it attracts you and you will find singing to it and, yes, even copying synth sounds after you’ve watch the stream (again, it was lag-y. Yes. I can’t get over the fact that it was lagging the whole time even if YouTube had disabled the comment box. It was crazy!).

Onew&TheChair

As to the story-line of the music video; There was masked child at the start who “plugged” them which lead to their “activation” and it looks like the whole world became masked people who look like each other (I really didn’t get why there was an angry scorpion at the start and why was the plug bigger than the child) but then after that I did not know what was the story anymore. Maybe if you are a bit of curious and you really wanted to know the whole truth about the song and music video, you’ve probably researched a little about what the lyrics mean (yes, I did that) but just like what the lazy version of myself whispers to me I wanted a more obvious story just like that mysterious girl they put on to Dream Girl and Alice in Wonderland-like jumping around falling into a dizzying maze house kind of thing which was a concrete story until the end or you can stick with your own version of the storyline, yes, the one you concocted in your head.

hashtag

You did not doubt them ever for any of their choreographies right? ‘coz, sure! SHInee’s dancing was never a question and I bet that they suit every dance there is. I even think that no matter how awkward the choreography is if you give that choreography to SHINee it will look one thousand times better. The whole dance routine looks really cool I can’t choose my favorite part but I think that part where Minho is kind of reviving the other members and the other members kind of shake when they are “revived” and the air running thing are all cool ideas.

SHINee

The ever reliable box set is the setting for this MV and yes, we’ve last seen it on SNSD’s Galaxy Supernova and SHINee’s very own Dream Girl MV. The reflective floor never loses its charm and magnificence, isn’t it? I just wish SM could do something else with the setting of their music videos. They’re love for their reflective floor box set is equivalent to YG’s love for their great white set (although YG is venturing on bringing their MVs out on “the real world” now which SM should take consideration of).

I won’t really be surprised of this single does better than Dream Girl because, for my taste, I like this more. Honestly, the whole dark concept suits them. They all look great (Yes, I wish Key will keep the black hair color for the rest of the year and Jong Hyun looks really hot on the teaser images!) but with the surge of comebacks the whole KPop has for this month let’s see how will this SHINee comeback will par with the rest of them.

Mini Album (Mini) Reaction Part:

  • The first thing that I realized upon hearing the whole album was that the tracks are arranged in decreasing order from the song with the strongest vibe to the softest.
  • I did not like Queen of New York upon the first time of hearing it but it kind of grows on you on the second try
  • One Minute has a Hip Hop-ish RNB feel to it
  • I know that it is really weird of me but I like Close the Door best because I think it is pretty unusual for SHINee to have a soft relaxed ballad track and, surprisingly, it actually works!
  • Colorful is your typical pop.
  • Although I like Everybody more than Dream Girl but I think Misconceptions of Me has a more cohesive collection of tracks than Everybody. The songs in this mini album are meant to stand on their own.

KPop Releases: AOA, T-ara, Kahi, Jung Joon Young & SHINee MVs

I’ve been thinking all day how to cope up with this number of MV releases and I’ve just decided to just let them be in one post. So, this is actually arranged by the time they are released today. So let’s go!

KPOpReleasesOct102013

First off, AOA unleashed their sexy side for their MV “Confused” (Korean Title direct translation: Shaking)

This music video of AOA actually came out at the same time with…

T-ara’s “Number 9”!

And when you thought that T-ara has only one comeback MV, well, you’re wrong! A few hours after releasing Number 9 they came out with a much subtle MV “Because I Know”

After waiting for her to comeback for quite a while, After School’s former leader, Kahi came back with “It’s Me”.

I know that you have been watching them in WGM but first let’s take a look at Jung Joon Young’s “The Sense of An Ending” Debut MV

Yes, you know it! The last one to release their comeback MV today is…. SHINee with their much anticipated MV, “Everybody”.

They might be the last one but I think the reception is not lacking for them.

I hope that you have enjoyed all the comebacks today. I know I did!

To Be Released Soon (ToBeRS): SHINee’s Why So Serious Teaser

Yep. Here it is, Chapter 2 of  SHINee’s album with the single ‘Why So Serious’. The song will be released on the 26th at noon KST (as stated at the video’s description box). However, the boys will promote as a four-member group due to Jong Hyun’s apparent injury.

Two albums in a year huh? Yep. Shawols might miss them that much but I think SM is satisfying your longing this time.

Let’s all look forward for this song’s release! SHINee (& Shawols) fighting!

Random Thoughts: Virtual Relationship, Real Relationship and Influencing Other People

Virtual Relationship

It’s not anymore a surprise for everybody, especially ShaWols, that Taemin is going to be in We Got Married with Na Eun (A Pink). Yes, two days ago the news was like an earthquake that struck the KPop community. They are all asking one thing: Why out of all the SHINee members it has to be Taemin? ‘cause he’s the youngest and (Hello?!) the guy just turned 20 and it does not seem right. They could’ve just picked his hyungs apparently but according to the show’s PD: He wants “a new couple that will give a vibe of first love”.

taemin na eun WGM

Err. Okay. I am sensing a hopeless romantic in that statement. Star-crossed lovers? Romeo and Juliet? Young innocent love? Okay, didn’t he checked his show’s title first? It says “we got MARRIED”. He’s like 19 (international age) and she’s also 19 (international age). It kinda feels weird and they kind of eloped there if this is in real life. Aren’t they too young to be “MARRIED”? I know that I’m on the fangilrs’ side right now, but they are really too young to be on this show. If they are up for the ratings, they will actually get it. Still, they’re too young!

Dear PD-nim,

You will get your ratings okay? I just don’t know if you’ll get the parent’s (& the fangirls’) approval for the wedding.

Real Relationship

tony an hyeri

Speaking of relationships and age, I am sure you’ve already heard about Tony An and Hyeri (Girl’s Day). They are apparently in a real-life relationship and according to their agencies: “They’re on the getting-to-know stage”. Age difference? She’s 18 (international age) and he’s 34 (again, international age), 16 years of age gap. It is a bit unusual because yah, he could be her uncle but it is quite normal nowadays too. I just hope that they are really in love with each other and if this relationship will push through, let’s just be happy for the both of them. (But let us comfort Sung Shiwon for the mean time. =D )

For that, here’s a Sung Siwon meme:

sung siwon meme

Influencing Other People

Psy did not make it to Times list of 100 Most Influential People. This is on a big scale isn’t it? I only remember 2 people from my own country making it to the list. Psy actually did well on the online voting, making it to the 7th spot but, by the end of the day, the editors still have the last say on who are going to be on the list.

Psy

Here’s the deal: He might be the biggest hit-maker of 2012 but did he influence you that much? Yes, he is fun and all, he did make you feel good and fun but I guess that’s it. Making it to Time’s 100 Most Influential People of the year takes more than people listening to your music. It actually takes making a difference on the view and lives of the general public and doing something that makes lives better. I think Psy qualified for ‘making lives better’ but let’s just let him be the fun person he is and let’s not make a big fuzz over this Times thing. Let’s just all love Psy and Love KPop.

OMO: (We all want to be their) Dream Girl (Right?) – [SHINee’s Dream Girl MV Review]

It’s becoming a cliché by the minute but YES! SHINee’s Back and they are back with a strong vengeance.

shinee

Let’s be honest about it, SM is the master of teasers and they will always succeed in making you giddy and will always push you to the edge of your seat, which is (1) great and (2) really annoying but either way you will always end up being intrigued and enthusiastic about the main thing. (Great marketing there SM!)

There’s one thing I wanted to point out, I was a bit confused with ‘DREAM Girl’ and ‘DAZZLING Girl’ at first. What’s up with describing ‘Girls’? Tagging the previous blogs for SHINee’s comeback was a bit confusing because the browser continue to suggest ‘DAZZLING’ and not ‘DREAM’. (Holla there GURL!)

shinee THE dream girl

As you have already known (and in case, you don’t) they released both the dance version & the regular version (yep. we’ve decided to go for ‘regular version’ instead of calling it ‘plain’) at the same time. We don’t really know if there’s still a practice version of this but without the practice version these available versions can stand up for themselves. It did us (the audience) a great favor and it did benefit the company because we do demand for a dance version every time. (And when we say every time, we mean EVERY SINGLE TIME)

THE MV version

dance version

The song is has a hint of 80s with a synth (that made it to sound like a dance music ready for clubbing) therefore this can pass as a club music. (yey! this thing is really hard to describe guys.) I really have to agree with Electro Acid Funk this time (but we prefer to call this ‘Synth-ing Acid Funk’). It really sounds like a psychedelic synth disco track. However you describe this, it sure makes you want to dance.

Have you seen that mic stand stand move? (yes, two stands in the last sentence) It is really awesome!!! I am not really sure if Jonghyun and Taemin are both light weight or something but that thing is really ill dude! It’s great! So using mic stands for a dance routine is not always used in Kpop (aside from Nobody where the stands just stands on the stage). Who would have thought that you can manipulate them like a mop? That (children) is a very nice idea. They stand on the mic stand, toss the mic stand, and posed with the mic stand. (Damn! I wish I was the mic stand) SHINee will always be known for their innovative dance steps and this one is not an exemption.

shinee image3138

The MV – how do I start this? (Okay, there are 2 music videos and we will not MV review the dance one because it is just dance and it falls on the dance review paragraph above. I hope you all understand) So, the MV is full of falling and being caught on a bed. That’s pretty cool though (because this talks about ‘dreams’ right?) and it is not just full of waking up and falling again to sleep (but those kind of scenes still exists in this vid). The trampoline-wormhole thing is black and white (and not so astigmatic friendly because, yah, I have one) but the scene when Minho didn’t know if he’ll stand up or slide down did played my mind off. It disoriented me if the thing really rotates or not. Aside from being black and white, this video is also colorful and playful. Taemin is sitting on a ladder beside a humongous painting wearing cute stuff with a cap while Key is sitting on the floor looking cute in pink. They look really kid-like while Key is pulling the red cloth off the frame. Then Onew is acting cute before (and we couldn’t snip that scene, we’ve literally played and pause the vid for nth times and no we can’t freeze the scene) the mic stand scene. Jonghyun did the mic stand stand first it was pretty really cool. Key is with his megaphone again (First Kiss perf, yes?) and Minho is being pulled by another Minho using a red string. Isn’t that Alice in Wonderland-ish? Sort of. The tilted room is sort of fantastic too.

shinee the tilted patio thingy

It is really, indeed, refreshing to see SHINee again. We all missed them. Powerful dance moves is never the same without SHINee right? KPop feels really kind of empty without these energic young men right? I really have to point out how Taemin grew so much from the last MV. He is indeed now as a man. He was once a skinny young lad but, look at him now, isn’t he a dreamy young man? He is. (Then flash backs from a variety show starts) Do you remember that scene from a variety show (I can’t really remember which one) where he was faced with Minho’s height and he told him that he is still young and he will surely grow up still. I don’t know if he is already taller than Minho but still is not a kid anymore (Although he is still the maknae)

shinee taemin falling

Here goes my minor rants) First, I really don’t like those ‘almost static’ screens that they used as transitions for the scenes in this MV. They kind of disturb my viewing. Why do they have to ‘flower-fy’ the face of the girl? (To protect her? err.) Viewers like me always wanted to see the beauty of the leading ladies in all MVs or maybe she was only just a dream and they can’t remember her face? Maybe.

I know that most of Shawols are a bit frustrated by the Sherlock thing that happened last year where the group only got to promote one track and (poof!) they were catapulted to Japan. People, Shawols waited for SHINee for one and a half year and you will only give them one song?! That’s very cruel of you there SM! (You’re bad…hmp!) I really hope that this time, SHINee will be around longer IN KOREA. (Have you heard about the PV though?) It’s not that I hate them being in Japan or such. No offense to Japan and the Japanese fans but I hope they promote more in their home country this time. They deserve to reclaim their limelight in KPop where they are greatly missed. (I remember how happy are we when we saw them perform Sherlock during MAMA.)

Overall, this MV is great and the song is good. This is not their best song out of the entire album (my mini album review will be in the P.S. section). But whatever, I am just really happy that they are around (again, finally!).

cute leader photo

P.S. [Album Thoughts]

I have decided to listen to the full album so here it goes (my opinions about some songs)

  • I like Hitchhiking & Runaway the most (they are on repeat on my phone’s music player) and I think they should’ve made Runaway their carrier single but yah, I think Dreamgirl made through well.
  • Punch Drunk Love really sounds like a Jackson 5 song.
  • Aside can actually make it as a Kdrama OST.
  • Beautiful seems out of place (or something, it somehow sounds like it didn’t fit in the album)
  • Finally, Dynamite is definitely a club music

Random Thoughts: Chansung’s Acting, Wonder Girls (Indirect Disbandment), Purplay’s Name and Choreography, Shinee’s Comeback and Things (that passed my mind this week)

A week ago Chansung’s (2PM) first acting project, 7th Grade Civil Servant was aired and he stars alongside with Joo Won (from Baker King) and Choi Kang Hee (from Protect the Boss). (Because my mom is an avid Kdrama follower) I had the chance to see how he did on the debut episodes of the show. I guess he did well for a Kdrama starter and he does look good in a suit and in a military uniform (always). He plays a role of an ex-military officer whom fought in a war and he has this kind of trauma that involves a young girl shooting people in a camp. I could go on for spoilers here but I won’t do that and I would just suggest that you should check out the drama because I heard that it is on top of the rating’s chart on its designated timeslot.

chansung

Yes, Sunye got married almost two weeks ago and (another), yes, JYP announced that the other members would do solo activities but why did not just made it direct or something? Is this an indirect disbandment? Would Sunye comeback? I guess the company has nothing tangible to hold on to and they too do not know where this thing will go. They did a (maybe) final performance (wait for it) “before Sunye moves to Canada”. <= That quoted phrase puts me in a lot of frustration, really! So, JYP, did they just disbanded (without us knowing)? Can the Wonder Girls just disappear like that? I mean, they did went under a lot of things: Nobody was a definite hit, they did the US thing and they put a lot of effort in studying the foreign language, they went through a lot of jet lags, did a Nick series, and they danced Like This. I guess, JYP did the best decision ever when he let Sunye get married and he is the best CEO ever for that but what about the rest of the members?

wg

They are hinting that the Wonder Girls will get dissolved and the individual members will go on solo. Again, the effort of building the ‘Wonder Girls’ brand… (*sigh*) (Can’t we just get or appoint another person as the leader?) I am happy because this company is putting the artists’ happiness first before anything else but it really leaves me confused and frustrated; we can’t extract something or anything analyzing this, right?! At this point, I just wish the other remaining members Good Luck and I am (with all honesty) Happy for Sunye. She deserves all the happiness in the world.

What’s with the name Purplay? What the hell is a ‘purplay’? I think the group name is a result of lack of creativity (as well as the choreography). They deserve a thinking time for this. Seriously. To the company that manages them, I get the point that these things are also considered as publicity but copying something out of the blue is not a thing to be proud about. They can dance well though (as seen on their teaser).

Purplay Members

Shinee’s Back (a la Minho style). They will drop the album on the 19th and they have already realeased Key’s, Taemin’s and Jonghyun’s teaser photos (Who would’ve thought they will release Key’s pics first, right?) They will comeback with the track Dazzling Girl and I just hope that they will not just a single track this time (remember Sherlock last year?). See, Shinee can give a lot and they deserve a longer time under the spotlight this time (and I don’t want my Shawol friend to be that lonely again). I would just like to remind that: Most of the time teaser photos are not connected in any way (theme-wise) with the specific song, so let us just stop guessing what the theme of the comeback song will be. That sure thing is that I’ll be watching out for the MV and their killer dance moves, until then. This is out of the comeback topic, but have you seen Key’s Sketchers photo lately? Yep. They’ll be endorsing Sketchers too.

shinee

Jinwoon and Taecyon will be on We Got Married. So that makes it a total of 3 JYP talents have been featured on the said show. Taecyon will be on the ‘international’ version, meaning he will be paired with another talent that is not Korean and is not in Korea. The rumor has it that his partner will be Gui Gui from Taiwan. Jinwon on the other hand, will be on the regular We Got Married. I and wish them a happy (pseudo)married life! (*cough* remember Lee Joon *cough*) I really hope that it will run smoothly for both of them.

jinwoon&taec

Jay Park had two headliners this week; one about that hand with fingers and the other a surprising career (should we call it?) shift. He truly lives his life YOLO-like (the negative YOLO one) and posted a pic of him doing some dirty hand. I don’t know about you but for me, that kind of gesture should not be uploaded anywhere online. Surprisingly, a day after that incident, it was announced that he will be joining the permanent cast of Saturday Night Live Korea (SNL Korea). I am very positive that the incident is just another publicity stunt. Like, c’mon people! I know he has hosting gigs and such but he is not under the radar for quite a while. He needs some spotlight before announcing big things, right?

jaypark

As you have read, this post turned out to be mostly about JYP artists. To make it clear, I am not JYP biased or something it’s just they appear on the news quite often this past week .

And before I totally forget: Happy Lunar New Year!
(Enjoy the season of Hanboks and New Year greetings fellow Kpop-loving people.)
새해 복 많이 받으세요. =)
