OMO: Intrigued With Their Something? – [TVXQ’s Something MV Review]

Suit it up! Let’s all welcome this year with TVXQ!

TVXQ Something

We all agree that they’ve got that something, right? After these guys went missing for more than a year in which the last time I saw them was when they had an overlap promotions with SNSD’s TaeTiSeo and after they had their series concerts for the last part of 2013; Now, they are back in KPop with “Something”. As you know by now, Something is the title track of their 7th Album Tense and Tense. What makes this album extra special is that this is their 10th Anniversary Album. So if you are religiously following these boys, Yup! It has been that long. Congratulations!

The MV started with the boys walking proudly and some flawless models doubling as portraits moving their heads to the direction of these very available gentlemen (Very AXE Commercial, right?). They started with a very flirty whispers telling you that “She Got That Something” (It would be very nice to be that she though) and you’ll be surprise that they are indeed leaning on a couple of threads which I will talk about later. The MV went on to a Gatsby-like setting complete with vintage mics, a Big Band (with brass instruments), dancers with hats, vintage cars and vintage mics! The MV looks like aiming for that 1920s atmosphere which they have somehow achieved thanks to the vintage everything! The upside down transitions in this  are pretty cool too.

Something is neither your typical nor classic TVXQ; this is far from Ballad, Pop, RNB, Electro or slight Rock that they have been staging for the past years. Honestly, this is an unexpected twist of genre from TVXQ. I didn’t thought they would be venturing on the land of Big Band Jazz-Swing for this special album because when you hit me with TVXQ, I would probably react Mirotic out of anything else. This is new which is you need to get accustomed to somehow. I mean, it is fairly automatic to assume that when it’s something from TVXQ it will be automatically somehow electro that you get a slight hint of uneasiness when you play this track for the first time which is normal. And if you are thinking that this 1920s themed song got near to being a lounge song, well, it didn’t. I have to give these boys plus points for that. Most of those who dared to sing something from this era of Big Band ended up being boring but that is not the case for this single. It managed to continue being entertaining for the rest of the play time which is a good thing. The blending of their voices too is really good.

The highlight for the choreography of Something would be something thread-y. Yep! I have to say that this music video utilized its resources pretty well. The quaintness of using strings for the beginning and the ending of the choreography is pretty eye-catching. The minute they begun strumming those giant strings you will have the feeling that you needed to find the one who managed to think about that and thank him personally. It was a great idea! If you are wondering how rusty can you be after 10 years, Changmin and Yunho will slap you across your face because after all these time they are still way up there in the top on the dancing food chain and the Yunho’s marionette-like thread dance and Micheal Jackson-like bend at the end using those strings are genius!

The MV and the song are pretty smooth sailing this time (I think SM SOMEHOW already outgrew themselves from those I-will-mash-up-everything days once upon a year) with the exemption of one part: Yunho’s dance beak part. That point where it started I actually face palmed and shouted in my head “OH NO! HERE IT GOES AGAIN!” but luckily it only lasted for a few seconds and we have to commend Yunho’s great dance in that part but no SM, you do not cut a Big Band song to insert an electro thing in the middle of it all. No SM… Just No. And SM before I forget, what’s with the hobby of putting artificial tattoos and body paints everywhere?

This is a slightly classy, a bit flirty, a whole vintage and a lot playful MV from the rest of the TVXQ content than ever before and it is somehow refreshing to see how they take on this kind of genre without boring anyone.

It is a really great way to start this year with these guys and, again through it all, you ALL made it! Congratulations on your 10th year! Here’s to ten plus and plus and plus years more! You all worked hard!
